Imitayson is a tautly told thriller, a strange and compelling sort of subtle mystery that can only be appreciated in its entirely. Call it ... ‘a gestalt ghost story,’ though to be honest, I’m not exactly sure what that’s supposed to mean.” – J. Patrick Brown, DigBoston

Synopsis

“The bad man” can't harm Kyla when she sleeps under her uncle's bed. Her uncle spends his nights on the couch, running from the all-seeing, metaphysical worms of an esoteric Japanese faith in a recurring nightmare. In the early aftermath of the death of the young girl's parents, Kyla and her uncle are adapting to life with one another. They are getting by the best they can, each dealing with the tragedy in their own way, but something is amiss. When Kyla begins to mimic her belated parents, what will these imitations reveal about the past and future of her family?

DigBoston Review

August 2011
By J. Patrick Brown

I didn’t quite know what to expect going into Peter Paul Payack’s adaptation of his brother Mike’s short film, and honestly, neither should you. Imitayson (Haitian Creole, for “It’s a cognate, genius”) is a tautly told thriller, a strange and compelling sort of subtle mystery that can only be appreciated in its entirely. Call it ... “a gestalt ghost story,” though to be honest, I’m not exactly sure what that’s supposed to mean. Would look real cool as a back-cover blurb, though. Hint, hint.

Admittedly “you’ll just have to buy it and find out” doesn’t leave us much in terms of a review—I could praise the particular efficacy of Peter Paul’s evocative cyber-sketch art style, or the surprising wealth of background material that they managed to cram into the slim, eighty-ish page volume, or even the brazenness of an Honest Pint in-joke, but that's just skirting the issue. A good story, well told, for less than a round of drinks. Get on that.

Seriously, Pete. Cover blurb.
